Product Image Best Practices for Shopify

How to shoot, edit, and optimise product images for Shopify — covering format, file size, alt text, and the image types that drive the most conversions.
In ecommerce, your product images are your product. Customers cannot touch, smell, or try on what you're selling. Your images have to do that work. Investing in better product photography is almost always more impactful than investing in more ad spend.
The Essential Image Set
- Hero lifestyle image: product in context, aspirational setting
- Clean white background studio shot: required for marketplace listings
- Detail/close-up shot: shows material, quality, craftsmanship
- Scale shot: shows product size relative to a person or common object
- In-use shot: someone actively using the product
Technical Specifications
Shopify recommends square images at 2048×2048px for zoom compatibility. Use JPEG for photography (smaller file size), PNG for graphics with transparency, and WebP where your theme supports it. Compress images before upload — Shopify's CDN resizes images, but it doesn't compress originals you've uploaded unoptimised.
Alt Text for SEO and Accessibility
Alt text serves two purposes: accessibility for screen readers, and SEO signal for image search. Write descriptive alt text that includes the product name, key attribute, and brand name where natural. 'Blue linen shirt — men's relaxed fit — The Shore Supply Co.' is better than 'blue shirt' or 'shirt 1'.
Video and 360° Imagery
Short product videos (15–30 seconds) showing the product in motion significantly reduce purchase anxiety for apparel, footwear, and anything with a tactile quality. Shopify supports video assets natively on product pages. If full video production is out of budget, a simple turntable 360° image is a strong middle ground.
