Shopify Pop-ups: Best Practices for 2026

Pop-ups can be one of the highest-converting tools on your Shopify store or one of the most damaging. Here's how to use them in 2026 to grow your list and recover sales.
Pop-ups have a bad reputation — and they have earned it. Badly implemented pop-ups fire immediately on page load, are impossible to dismiss on mobile, and offer little value to the visitor. But done correctly, pop-ups are among the highest-converting tools available to Shopify merchants. The email address captured from a well-timed popup is worth far more over the customer's lifetime than the momentary annoyance of seeing it.
The Rules of Good Popup Practice in 2026
- 1Never fire a popup immediately on page load — delay at least 8-15 seconds or wait for scroll depth
- 2Do not show popups to visitors who arrived from a paid ad — they are already engaged
- 3Never show a popup to someone who is mid-checkout
- 4Make dismissal trivially easy — large X button, 'No thanks' text option
- 5Show the same popup a maximum of once per user, not once per session
- 6Ensure your popup is fully functional on mobile — many are not
Popup Types and Their Uses
- Email capture on entry/scroll: 'Get 10% off your first order' — highest-volume list builder
- Exit intent: last-chance offer before a visitor leaves (see exit intent guide)
- Cart abandonment intent: fires when behaviour suggests the customer might leave the cart
- Seasonal promotion announcement: for time-limited sales or events
- Cookie consent / GDPR: required, not optional — should be prominent but not disruptive
What to Offer
The offer in your popup determines its conversion rate more than any design element. Percentage discounts ('10% off') work well for fashion and lifestyle brands. Free shipping offers work especially well for brands with lower ticket sizes. Free gift with first order and early access to new arrivals both test well for brands with strong product ranges.
Technical Considerations
Poorly implemented popups can trigger Google's intrusive interstitials penalty, which can harm your mobile search rankings. Ensure your popup does not cover the main content on mobile, is dismissible without scrolling, and is not triggered immediately after a user lands from a search result. Klaviyo, Privy, and OptiMonk all offer Google-compliant mobile popup templates.
“A popup that converts 5% of new visitors into email subscribers, who then convert to customers at 10%, is generating customers for the cost of a slightly interrupted browsing session. That is a trade worth making — if the experience is respectful.”
