Shopify Launchpad: Planning Flash Sales and Product Drops

Learn how to use Shopify Launchpad to orchestrate flawless flash sales, product drops, and seasonal campaigns without manual intervention on the day.
Product drops and flash sales are high-stakes events. A misconfigured discount, a theme that doesn't load, or a price that fails to revert after a sale can cost thousands in margin or damage customer trust. Shopify Launchpad — available exclusively to Plus merchants — removes the manual risk by scheduling every moving part of a campaign in advance.
What Launchpad Handles
- Scheduled theme publishing and reverting
- Price changes across selected products or collections
- Discount code activation and deactivation
- Script changes (e.g., buy-one-get-one activating at midnight)
- Sales channel visibility toggles
- Storefront password enable and disable
Planning a Flash Sale Event
Begin by mapping every element of your campaign: which products are involved, what the discount percentage is, whether you need a sale-specific theme or banner, and exactly when the sale starts and ends. Launchpad lets you create an event with a start time and end time, then attach each action to either the start or the end of the event.
Theme Scheduling for Campaign Pages
Many brands maintain a second theme variant with campaign-specific hero banners, countdown timers, and promotional messaging. Launchpad can publish this theme at your event start and revert to your standard theme automatically at the end — no manual publish required and no risk of forgetting to switch back.
Best Practice: Theme Preparation Checklist
- 1Duplicate your live theme before making campaign modifications
- 2Test all campaign theme changes in a preview before scheduling
- 3Ensure countdown timers use the correct timezone
- 4Verify all promotional images are optimised for page speed
- 5Test on mobile before scheduling the theme go-live
Managing Product Drops
For limited-edition product drops, Launchpad can control product visibility — keeping items hidden until exactly the right moment. This is particularly valuable for streetwear, collectibles, and beauty launches where the anticipation element is part of the brand experience.
Post-Event Reversion
The reversion phase is as important as the launch. Configure Launchpad to restore original prices, deactivate discount codes, and republish your standard theme at the event end time. This prevents the common (and costly) mistake of leaving sale prices active for days after a campaign has ended.
Limitations to Be Aware Of
Launchpad does not currently support scheduling metafield changes, complex inventory operations, or changes to third-party app configurations. For anything outside its scope, pair Launchpad with Shopify Flow to cover additional automation requirements.
“A well-configured Launchpad event means your team can focus on customer experience on launch day, rather than scrambling to change prices and swap themes at midnight.”
