Comparing Klaviyo and Mailchimp for Shopify stores in 2026. We break down features, pricing, segmentation, and which platform serious ecommerce brands should choose.

If you're running a Shopify store and trying to decide between Klaviyo and Mailchimp, the honest answer is that for most ecommerce brands above a certain size, there isn't much of a contest. But understanding why — and when Mailchimp might still make sense — requires a proper comparison.

Shopify Integration Depth

Klaviyo was built for ecommerce from day one. Its Shopify integration is native, real-time, and extraordinarily deep. Every product view, add-to-cart, purchase, and refund is synced as a profile event and can be used to trigger flows or build segments within minutes.

Mailchimp's Shopify integration, by contrast, was rebuilt from scratch after a falling-out with Shopify in 2019. It works, but the event data is less granular and the sync is slower. For browse abandonment flows — one of the highest-ROI automations in email — Klaviyo's real-time data is a genuine advantage.

Segmentation Capabilities

This is where the gap between the two platforms is most stark. Klaviyo's segmentation engine lets you build audiences based on virtually any combination of behaviour, purchase history, predicted attributes, and custom properties.

  • Segment by predicted lifetime value (Klaviyo's AI-powered prediction)
  • Segment by the specific products, categories, or collections someone has or hasn't purchased
  • Segment by number of orders, average order value, or days since last purchase
  • Combine email engagement data with purchase behaviour in a single segment
  • Use dynamic segments that update in real time as customer behaviour changes

Mailchimp's segmentation is competent for basic use cases — demographic splits, engagement tiers, purchase frequency — but it lacks the granularity that serious ecommerce brands need for truly personalised campaigns.

Automated Flows and Revenue Attribution

Klaviyo calls them 'flows'; Mailchimp calls them 'automations'. Both support the standard ecommerce automation playbook: welcome series, abandoned cart, post-purchase, win-back. The difference is in the sophistication of branching logic and the quality of revenue attribution reporting.

Key insightKlaviyo's attribution reporting tracks exactly which flows and campaigns are driving revenue, with configurable attribution windows. This makes it far easier to justify your email investment and identify which automations need optimisation.

Pricing Comparison

Mailchimp is cheaper at lower contact counts. At 10,000 contacts, Mailchimp's Essentials plan costs around £100/month; Klaviyo's equivalent is around £150/month. But as your list grows, Mailchimp's pricing escalates sharply — and by 50,000+ contacts, the pricing gap narrows considerably.

  • Klaviyo: free up to 250 contacts, then scales by contact count
  • Mailchimp: free up to 500 contacts, Essentials from £10/month
  • At 25,000 contacts, Klaviyo is typically 10-20% more expensive than Mailchimp Standard
  • At 100,000+ contacts, pricing is broadly comparable — but Klaviyo's revenue impact justifies the cost

The Verdict

For any Shopify store generating over £10k/month in revenue, Klaviyo is the clear choice. The depth of integration, segmentation power, and flow capabilities will generate more incremental revenue than the cost difference. For very early-stage brands still building their audience and learning email marketing fundamentals, Mailchimp's free tier is a reasonable starting point.

We've helped dozens of brands migrate from Mailchimp to Klaviyo. Without exception, every single one has seen their email revenue as a percentage of total revenue increase within 90 days of migration.
