Link Building Strategies for Ecommerce Stores

Ecommerce link building requires a different playbook to service businesses. Here are the most effective tactics for building authoritative backlinks to your Shopify store.

Link building for ecommerce is one of the most challenging aspects of digital marketing. Product pages rarely earn organic links, and the competitive landscape is dominated by retailers with enormous marketing budgets. Yet independent Shopify stores consistently outrank larger competitors when they execute a focused, tactical link building strategy. Here's what works.

Product Review Outreach

Identify relevant bloggers, YouTubers, and content creators in your product niche. Offer product samples in exchange for an honest, disclosed review on their platform. A review from a blogger with a Domain Rating of 40+ and an engaged audience in your niche is more valuable than a dozen directory listings. Focus on creators whose audience genuinely overlaps with your target customer.

Affiliate and Partnership Programmes

Running an affiliate programme creates a financial incentive for content creators to feature your products. While affiliate links are typically nofollowed, the relationship often results in editorial coverage that does earn followed links — particularly in 'best of' roundups and comparison content. Use a platform like Refersion or Impact to manage your affiliate programme.

Resource Page Link Building

Many industry association websites, educational organisations, and niche blogs maintain resource pages linking to useful tools, guides, and suppliers. Use Google to find these pages: '[your niche] + resources', '[your niche] + useful links'. If you have genuinely useful content — a buying guide, a care guide, a how-to resource — pitch it for inclusion.

  • Create a free resource that provides genuine value to your target audience
  • Identify resource pages in your niche using Google search operators
  • Send a personalised, short pitch explaining why your resource adds value to their page
  • Follow up once after 2 weeks — no more than that
Key insightThe quality of your pitch matters enormously. A generic mass email will be ignored. Research the site owner, reference specific content they've published, and make a compelling case for why your resource serves their audience.

Brand Mention Reclamation

Use Ahrefs Alerts or Google Alerts to monitor mentions of your brand name across the web. When you find an unlinked mention — a publication mentioning your store without a link — email the author and politely request they add a link. This is one of the easiest link building tactics with a high success rate because the publication already values your brand enough to mention it.

Competitor Link Gap Analysis

Use Ahrefs' Link Intersect tool to find sites that link to your competitors but not to you. These sites are demonstrably willing to link to businesses in your space — you just need to give them a reason. Review each linking site to understand why they linked to your competitor and whether you have content that could earn a similar link or a better version of whatever they linked to.
